Florariums, also known as bottle gardens, actually function as miniature greenhouses. The perfectly sealed jars house tropical plants that love humidity, so this closed, warm, humid environment is closer to their native habitat than if they were grown in pots. Special drainage layers are created in the jar so that excess water can seep into the water-tight layers, thus avoiding stagnant water, which is ideal for the development of infections and fungi. Once the appropriate amount of water is established and the ecosystem is in harmony, natural water circulation begins inside the jar, so the plants regain the necessary amount of water from the condensation on the walls of the jar. The planted plants do not outgrow the jar, as they adapt to the size of the jar, but they can completely overgrow it, and even produce new roots, shoots, and fresh new plants can appear in the jar garden. They produce the necessary oxygen and carbon dioxide for themselves through photosynthesis, just like in nature. Later, jumping forks appear, which are the oldest terrestrial organisms on Earth, and these small, humus-forming arthropods measuring 0.2–9 mm in size are extremely important parts of both the terrestrial and bottle garden ecosystems. They feed on dead plant parts, which they recycle into the soil, thus ensuring a continuous supply of nutrients for the florarium plants. In practice, florariums are shrunken images of nature, completely self-sustaining, maintenance-free ecosystems.
